Today’s Headlines

Waiakea ends Kamehameha-Hawaiʻi’s run at the BIIF crown. The Warriors beat KS-Hawaiʻi in five sets (23-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-14, 15-11) on Wednesday at Hawaiʻi Prep in Waimea for their first BIIF Division I title since 2017, and ended Kamehameha’s bid for a seventh straight. Shaylee Kahauolopua had 13 kills and three aces. Waiakea (17-1) is the No. 3 seed at states with a first-round bye (West Hawaii Today).

Hilo grabs the last BIIF state berth. The Vikings beat Keaʻau in five sets (25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9) in the third-place match. Hilo (14-4) travels to Moanalua on Monday; Kamehameha-Hawaiʻi (11-4) hosts Mililani in the first round (West Hawaii Today).

Kahuku and Waipahu hold the OIA volleyball crowns. Kahuku beat Moanalua for its second straight Division I title, and Waipahu won its first Division II title since 1975. ʻIolani took the ILH and Kauaʻi High the KIF banner. The HHSAA Division II tournament opens Tue Oct 27.

Football turns to Saturday after a Friday night of OIA Open playoffs and big neighbor-island games. Friday’s slate had Leilehua (1-6) at Campbell (6-3) and Waiʻanae (7-1) at ʻAiea (6-2) in the OIA Open, Damien at ʻIolani, Hilo at Kamehameha-Hawaiʻi, Konawaena at Keaʻau and Maui at Baldwin; MaxPreps had posted no finals for any of them at press time. Saturday brings Kailua at Kahuku (7p), Saint Louis vs. Punahou (3p) and Kauaʻi at Kapaʻa (2:30p).

A note on sources: ScoringLive now keeps live scores and results inside its paid app (results are app-only this season). Its free site still lists schedules, so we pull finals from MaxPreps, the Star-Advertiser, the neighbor-island papers and school athletics sites. This update ran at 2 a.m. Saturday, so today’s games have not been played. Friday night’s games had no final posted yet, so the latest football finals below are from Saturday Oct 17 and earlier. Where a score was not posted publicly, we say so.

Molokaʻi Farmers MIL

Molokaʻi High School — MIL member since 1984 · Green & White

Molokaʻi High competes across the MIL in football (returned to 11-man for the 2024 season after years as 8-man), baseball, basketball, volleyball, cross country, paddling, wrestling, judo, and air riflery. The Farmers punch above their roster size — a school of around 400 students fielding a full MIL slate is a community effort, with paddling and wrestling traditionally among their strongest programs.

For current scores and schedules, the Molokai Dispatch sports section is the most reliable source.

Lānaʻi Pine Lads & Pine Lasses MIL

Lānaʻi High & Elementary School — MIL member · Green & Gold

Lānaʻi’s enrollment is the smallest of any HHSAA-member school by a wide margin, and what they accomplish with that roster is one of the better stories in Hawaiʻi prep athletics. The Pine Lads finished 6-0 in 2024 to win the MIL 8-Man Football Championship — the school’s first undefeated regular season. The Pine Lasses won the school’s first-ever MIL basketball title in 2023. Sports: baseball, basketball, paddling, cross country, football, volleyball, wrestling.

Lānaʻi sports coverage tends to live on Maui-side outlets — The Maui News sports section and the school’s own social channels.

Niʻihau CULTURAL

Niʻihau ʻohana on Kauaʻi — ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi medium schools

Niʻihau doesn’t keep a sports scoreboard — but the work of perpetuating ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi is its own kind of championship.

Two charter schools on Kauaʻi serve Niʻihau ʻohana and teach entirely in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi: Ke Kula Niʻihau O Kekaha (KKNOK) and Kula Aupuni Niʻihau A Kahelelani Aloha (KANAKA). Both are small, both are remarkable. The scoreboard for these schools is measured in fluent graduates, ʻoli composed, mele preserved, and the simple fact that a child can complete K–12 in their mother tongue without leaving home culture behind.

Kahoʻolawe RESTORATION

Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve — 50 years of Aloha ʻĀina (1976–2026)

Kahoʻolawe has no athletics — but it has a different kind of scoreboard. The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) tracks restoration progress year over year: acres replanted in native species, erosion control structures built, water catchment installed, cultural sites stabilized.

The 50th anniversary of the modern Aloha ʻĀina movement was marked in 2026 — five decades since the first occupations in 1976 that ended the Navy’s use of the island as a bombing range. For the current year’s restoration numbers, KIRC publishes annual reports at kahoolawe.hawaii.gov. The Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana opened its 44th annual Makahiki season in November 2025 — the cultural rhythm of the island continues year by year. PKO updates.
